On Novemeber 11, 1976, the world got to meet Douglas William Kelly. Welcomed home by his parents, Tom and MaryEllen and big brother Thomas and big sister Debbie and called Massapequa Park his home. He played T-ball and soccer as a youngster. In school, Doug was in the orchestra and played the bass. He attended East Lake Elementary School till 1988 then moved to McKenna Junior High School, Berner Junior High School and finally Masspequa High School where he graduated in 1994.
Not long after High School, Doug enlisted in the US Navy. He was stationed in California, Mississippi, a short stint in Florida, New York and Virginia. Most of his Naval career was spent aboard the USS Yorktown as a sonar technician. He traveled the world with the Navy and had so many stories to share of the different ports he stopped in. During his time in the stationed in Mississippi, he met and married his first wife Jana and shortly after his daughter Kalyn was born in 1999. Kalyn was the light of Doug's life and it was evident in the way he spoke of her how deeply in love he was being called daddy. Even after his marriage to Jana came to an end, they remained good friends and we all got to see Kalyn grow up through Doug's eyes, stories and most of all, his heart. His career took him home here to New York as a recruiter and he loved being home, close to his family. He was an amazing uncle to Joe, Briana and Frankie and also stood as God-father to his nephew Frankie. Being stationed here in NY allowed him the time to spend with his family.
Doug retired from the Navy in Dec of 2007 a decorated Petty Officer Seaman 1st Class with many certificates of merit and commendations. After his retirement, Doug was a Mr. Fix it kind of guy. Working on his home and doing odd jobs for people that he actually labeled himself "Rent a Husband" to help fix things for people who's spouses may have been military and stationed abroard or just working where they could not fix what had to be done. Doug also had a passion for singing especially karaoke. His other joy's in life included his furry 4 legged child, Diva, an austrialian shepard and his cars and motorcycle.
Doug's passion for life, family, his friends and all those he came in contact with is a standing legacy to the man he had become.
